McLaren has appointed Mick Schumacher as a reserve driver for the 2023 Formula 1 season.
McLaren will field Lando Norris and rookie Oscar Piastri this season but will be able to call upon Schumacher in the event of either being unavailable.
Schumacher joined Mercedes as its reserve driver for 2023 and will also be made available to McLaren, if required, as part of an arrangement between the teams.
Mercedes currently acts as McLaren’s power unit partner.
McLaren has had similar arrangements with other teams in previous seasons.
It called upon Mercedes’ Nyck de Vries, now a full-time AlphaTauri racer, in São Paulo last year amid concerns over Norris’ fitness due to a bout of food poisoning.
De Vries undertook a seat fit in the car before Norris was ultimately declared fit to compete.
Piastri, now McLaren’s race driver, was also one of its reserves in 2022 through an arrangement the squad had with his then backer Alpine.
McLaren also has 2021 IndyCar champion Alex Palou on its books as one of its reserve drivers.
