Formula 1 drivers will be banned from changing the design of their helmet during the season in a move F1 bosses believe will help fans to identify drivers more easily.
The proposal was originally put forward in 2013 but rejected. However during Tuesday’s F1 Commission meeting in Geneva, the idea as put forward again and this time received enough support.
Therefore a driver must now start the season and end it with the same or a very similar design, with only minor modifications allowed for things like sponsors.
It follows a recent change which has seen drivers assigned permanent race numbers in a bid to help promote them and the sport and to help fans identify them more easily at the track and at home.
The rule change will put an end to special one-off helmets which are popular amongst drivers at special events on the race calendar, such as Monaco, Singapore’s night race and their home race.
Sebastian Vettel is known for changing his helmet and has used roughly 60 different designs since he started racing with Red Bull in 2009 – that’s roughly ten per season.
