Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has published a short message in tribute to Brazillian footballing legend Pele, who has passed away aged 82.
The news of Pele’s death was confirmed by his daughter on social media.
Pele, widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, attended a number of F1 races during his life.
These included trips to the Brazilian Grand Prix at Intergalos, which saw him also present trophies on the podium.
“Very sad to hear the news that Pele, one of greatest footballers ever has passed away,” read a statement from Domenicali.
“He was a shining light for Brazil and millions around the world. His skill, smile and brilliance will live on forever. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
Lewis Hamilton, who was made an honorary citizen of Brazil earlier this year due to his close affection with teh country, also took to social media to tribute Pele.
“Lost a legend today,” the seven-time F1 World Champion wrote.
“Thank you for sharing your talent, genius and love with us. Pele’s legacy will inspire us forever and always.”
Hamilton also posted a signed Brazilian following jersey that he recieved from Pele, highlighting: “Meant so much to get this from the legend himself.
“Keeping it safe with me always.”
