Max Verstappen picked up a prestigious award in his home country on Wednesday night, as he was named the Dutch Sportsman of the Year.

It marks the third time that the Red Bull Formula 1 driver has picked up the accolade.

He first won the award in 2016, following his maiden campaign with the Milton Keynes-based squad that saw him become a grand prix winner.

He won it a second time in 2021 after securing his maiden F1 title following a season-long battle against Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

His 2022 recognition comes after a dominant campaign in which he set a new record for most F1 wins in a single season.

Verstappen was crowned World Champion in 2022 with several rounds to spare, while Red Bull took home its first Constructors’ title since 2013.

Verstappen had competition for the Sportsman of the Year award in multiple track cycling World Champion Harrie Lavreysen and Olympic speed skating champion Thomas Krol.

The Dutchman was not present at the ceremony, however his sister Victoria was there to represent him and pick up the trophy.

2023 will mark Verstappen’s ninth season in F1, as he looks to continue his run of success.

There will be a second full-time Dutch driver on the grid next year, as Nyck de Vries has been signed by AlphaTauri.
