Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso insists he won’t retire from Formula 1 until he’s won another championship to bring his tally to three.
The Spaniard has come close to securing that elusive third on four occasions. In 2007 he was just one point off Kimi Raikkonen and in 2010, 2012 and 2013 he finished second to Sebastian Vettel.
He’s therefore desperate to finally nail down another title and he says he won’t retire until he’s done so.
“We are still hungry for success, waiting for our opportunity to become champion [again],” the 32-year-old told BBC Sport.
“This is the main goal and you don’t think of retiring until you get some satisfaction.”
He won his two championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006. A third would put him in the same league as Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda and Sir Jackie Stewart amongst others.
“It is something I am working for and hoping for,” he added.
“It is not that I’m not happy with two but the third puts you in a list of very important names.
“I think I can carry on long enough to win and to be competitive for some good years. I don’t know how many – three, five, seven. I don’t think it should be any problem.”
