Lance Stroll says he is striving to get into a “more comfortable place” with Aston Martin’s AMR22 after revealing a lack of confidence with the car.
Stroll has endured a subdued season so far, often trailing team-mate Sebastian Vettel, and has been towards the lower end of Formula 1’s midfield.
Stroll replicated his best finish of 10th on home soil in Canada, having previously scored the final point in Emilia Romagna and Miami.
He holds only 18th in the standings, ahead of just Mick Schumacher, two-race stand-in Nico Hulkenberg, and compatriot Nicholas Latifi.
“We’re always learning but I think just on my side I want to get into a better and more comfortable place with the car,” said Stroll.
“I still feel that I’m not really that confident in the car, and [not] feeling very precise and just predictable in the car.
“Yeah, I think I’ve still got to get working to get back to the place I felt I was at last year and the year before where it was just more predictable and more comfortable.
“Right now it’s still a little bit difficult for me and I’ve got to keep working with my engineers and try and sort that out.”
Stroll ran an alternative strategy, profiting from the late Safety Car period that enabled him to successfully attack McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo on fresh Mediums, but was still seeking answers over his own speed.
“It’s a bit that the car characteristics are very stiff, maybe the set-up – I’m not driving anyone else’s car so I don’t know – but we’ve just got to keep working and understanding,” he said.
“It’s definitely more challenging this year than the last few years just to get it to a happy place and rhythm.”
