Evans beats Vergne to Formula E victory in Jakarta
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mitch Evans took his third Formula E race win of the 2021/22 season in Jakarta, fending off Jean-Eric Vergne in the final laps for the victory.

The Jaguar driver was engaged in a close battle for several laps with Vergne, with the DS Techeetah racer holding the lead of the E-Prix for much of the event.

However with six minutes remaining on the clock, Evans produced a successful overtake on the two-time Champion to move to the head of the pack.

With the move complete, Vergne looked to get back in front of his rival and hounded the rear of the Jaguar for the remainder of the race.

Their tussle allowed Edoardo Mortara in third place to close in, with the trio engaged in a fight for the win on the final lap.

With his energy level ticking close to zero, Vergne was forced to abandon his attack on Evans through the final corners, instead focusing on keeping Venturi’s Mortara behind.

Across the line, Vergne was two-tenths of a second in front of Mortara, with Evans ahead taking the victory.

Antonio Felix da Costa, who began the E-Prix from the front row of the grid alongside team-mate Vergne, dropped to fourth at the chequered flag.

Stoffel Vandoorne was fifth for Mercedes, and retains the championship lead as Vergne failed to secure the race win. Jake Dennis was sixth, his best result for some time.

Lucas di Grassi was seventh in the second Venturi car, ahead of Pascal Wehrlein in eighth.

Andre Lotterer crossed the line in ninth place, however he was demoted out of the points after picking up a five-second time penalty for contact with Nyck de Vries, who retired from the race.

Loterrer’s penalty promoted Sam Bird into ninth place, while Sebastien Buemi picked up the final point on offer in 10th.

Antonio Giovinazzi was another retirement from the race, the ex-Formula 1 driver running with significantly less energy than his rivals throughout the race.

Oliver Rowland was the first driver to drop out of the event, after he lost a tyre from his car in the opening minutes of the E-Prix.

Formula E will return in one months’ time, with Marrakesh hosting the 10th round of the 2021/22 campaign.
