Van Amersfoort Racing’s Amaury Cordeel is just one penalty point away from receiving a race ban in Formula 2.
The Belgian driver picked up a further two penalty points during Saturday’s Sprint Race in Barcelona.
Cordeel was found to be in breach of Article 37.8 of the F2 Sporting Regulations, with the stewards determining that he was out of position at Safety Car Line 1 on the formation lap, before not subsequently entering the pit lane.
A statement from the stewards reads that Cordeel failed to make a good departure from his starting position and left the grid out of its grid order.
Drivers then have an opportunity to regain their position during the formation lap, but Cordeel didn’t do this in the required time.
He then didn’t return to the pit lane as mandated, forcing the stewards to hand him a 10-second stop/go penalty and two penalty points.
The points he collected were added to the nine he already had on his Super Licence, bringing his season total to 11.
Any driver that hits 12 penalty points is handed a race ban at the next applicable event.
A bulk of Cordeel’s penalty points came at the previous F2 round at Imola, where he picked up five points and multiple penalties through various incidents.
Should Cordeel receive a ban, he wouldn’t be the first F2 driver to be handed the punishment for exceeding the penalty point limit.
In 2019, driver Mahaveer Raghunathan was issued a in Austria after picking up nine penalty points at the previous round in France, which took him over the threshold.
