The second day of practice for the Indianapolis 500 has been canceled on account of pervasive rain the in area.
What began as light rain that delayed any on-track running, turned into heavy downpours later in the afternoon and officials lost hope of getting the track dry before the end of the day.
It looked for a time like cars would be able to get out on track for a bit of running before the rain started falling, but the weather turned worse five minutes before the scheduled green flag.
The last time a day of Indy 500 practice was completely canceled due to weather was on Tuesday, May 17, 2016.
Rain has often provided some interruptions during the two-week lead-up to the race, but never consistently enough to result in zero laps across an entire day.
When they aren’t participating in the traditional pranks on each other in the RV lot, drivers will look forward to Thursday for the next day of practice.
Six hours of running are scheduled for that day, and then on Friday everyone will be given extra boost pressure in their turbochargers to begin practicing for the weekend’s qualifying sessions.
