Wolff reveals kitchen chat that saved Hamilton relationship
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has spoken out about a chat he had for several hours with Lewis Hamilton that salvaged their relationship.

Hamilton once endured an intense rivalry at the Brackley-based team with former team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton bested Rosberg to the F1 titles in 2014 and 2015, however in 2016, Rosberg came out on top in a season that was filled with tension and on-track incidents.

Rosberg opted to walk away from F1 at the end of his championship-winning season, before Hamilton went on to secure four more titles to date.

Speaking to The Times, Wolff says that following his intense rivalry with Rosberg, he spoke to Hamilton during a Christmas party where their differences were put aside.

“We met at the Christmas party in my home in Oxfordshire that December, reluctantly,” Wolff said.

“I said we need to decide whether we want to work together or not. ‘You want to win as a driver, I want to win as a team. Sometimes our different agendas are going to lead to conflict and we need to decide whether we can cope with that situation’.

“We were in my kitchen. I said to him, and Susie [Wolff] didn’t much like this analogy, that even though Susie and I might disagree about something, [it] would never come into my mind to divorce.

“’And it’s the same with you Lewis,’ I said. ‘I don’t want a divorce. You’re the best driver. I want you in our car and we want to provide you with the best car’.

“We kind of went into this discussion at loggerheads and then, after four or five hours in the kitchen, we found ourselves on a totally different level.

“A purely business-related relationship had become a personal relationship.

“He’s a friend. [It] doesn’t mean we don’t argue anymore but now, Lewis’ success is the team’s success, and the team’s success is Lewis’ success.”

Hamilton is currently contracted to Mercedes until the end of the 2023 season.

‘You want to win as a driver, I want to win as a team.’

This pretty much says it all. It sure seems the real reason Rosberg retired is because he wanted out of that nightmare relationship, and he knew there was no chance of winning championships with another team. It’s a shame really, because had Rosberg stayed he could have easily kept winning, ultimately matching Hamilton’s Mercedes race win and championship stats with just one more season. Overall, Rosberg was a much better driver and healthier for the team, both due to his engineering background which allowed him to understand the car, while Hamilton often couldn’t even figure out how to input commands on his steering wheel during the radio clampdown era.

Rosberg is still the only driver to have been fined by his team for cheating and deliberately colliding with his teammate. He was poison. And he retired because he knew he’d never get that lucky again, 7 car problems to 1. Lol. He is clever, but Toto is lucky he had Lewis to negotiate with.

What a load of bull. First, no one else ever had problems with Rosberg as a teammate except Hamilton, yet Hamilton had problems with every one of his teammates except the well-behaved wingmen Bottas and Kovalainen. Second, Rosberg actually would have won in 2015 as well if not for two mechanical failures and Ricciardo puncturing his tyre in Hungary. Third, Rosberg’s stats at Mercedes were almost equal with Hamilton’s and with one more season he could have easily surpassed him. And let’s not forget he played an integral part of helping Mercedes develop into a winning team, and won in a car that wasn’t even a top 10 car, all the while absolutely crushing (understatement) seven-time champion Schumacher in the exact same equipment.

Lol, Enzo. Everyone is entitled to their view on the facts. You take it to a whole new level.
