The organisers of the Bahrain Grand Prix have confirmed that the 2014 event will be run at night, making it only the second night race on the calendar alongside Singapore.
The country is marking its tenth anniversary since its first Formula 1 race back in 2004 – though only nine races have been held there after the 2011 event was cancelled due to political unrest
The organisers have installed lighting similar to that of Abu Dhabi which is run during dusk. The system was successfully tested last week during the Bahrain round of the World Endurance Championship.
“We are delighted to be able to trial the first phase of our lighting project at the WEC, a major milestone in this hugely ambitious project for the BIC, which is scheduled for completion in February,” track boss Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al-Khalifa said.
“This is by far the biggest development project we have ever undertaken at the BIC since the circuit was first built.
“I believe that there can be no better way for us to mark our 10th anniversary in F1 by demonstrating our long term commitment to the sport through this significant investment.”
Al-Khalifa also promised upgrades to the track’s facilities and more entertainment pre and post-race.
