Edo Mortara won the second Formula E race of the season at Diriyah, as pole sitter Nyck de Vries dropped back with a damaged car.
Mortara started second on the grid but managed to take the lead off his teammate Lucas Di Grassi after the Brazilian passed De Vries, with Mortara then passing him a few laps later. De Vries then sustained damage after contact with Jean-Eric Vergne, with the Dutch championship leader eventually finishing 10th.
Robin Frijns finished second, with Di Grassi third. Frijns managed to pass Di Grassi but the safety car was brought out for Alexander Sims’ stricken car before he could challenge Mortara for the lead. With not enough time to clear Sims’ car before the end of the race, the race then finished under yellow, although the safety car came in three corners before the flag.
Andre Lotterer finished fourth for Porsche, a good recovery after the calamity in yesterday’s race. Andretti’s Jake Dennis was fifth, with Jean-Eric Vergne in sixth. Stoffel Vandoorne made good progress from 12th on the grid to seventh, while Oliver Rowland was eighth. Pascal Wehrlein finished 9th to score his first points of the year, with De Vries rounding out the top 10.
Mitch Evans finished just out of the points in 11th, in a no points race for Jaguar. Oliver Askew continued his good rookie form in 12th, with Antonio Felix da Costa in 13th. Sebastien Buemi came home 14th and is yet to score his first points of the season.
Buemi’s teammate Maximilian Gunther finished 15th in a disappointing weekend for Nissan. After starting on the back row, Sam Bird came through to finish 16th, but his strategy of saving energy for a mid-race safety car didn’t work out as the safety car came too late.
Nick Cassidy finished 17th after not being able to take part in qualifying after his practice 3 crash. The Dragon Penske Autosport and Nio 333 cars then brought up the rear, with Sergio Sette Camara, Oliver Turvey, Dan Ticktum and Antonio Giovinazzi in 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st.
Alexander Sims was the only retiree, putting the car in the wall at turn 6 with 10 minutes to go, causing the race to end under yellow.
