Jenson Button is expecting McLaren to be much closer to the front-runners at the Belgian Grand Prix, compared to previous races this season.
The Briton hasn’t been able to compete with the top few teams this season after McLaren started the year with a flawed car. However recent developments have gradually brought them closer to the front.
Whilst Button admits it might not look like they’ve made progress, he believes his result in Hungary is proof that they have.
“Seventh doesn’t look exciting,” he said. “[At the] last race we were fighting for a fifth, but I still think we’ve made a step forward, because the Mercedes looked quicker compared to the opposition.”
He is expecting everything to come together at the next race in Belgium, where he believes McLaren could begin to fight for a podium with a little luck.
“I think we’ve done a good job, and I think we’ll really show that at Spa,” he added. “It’s a different type of circuit, and a circuit that should suit what we put on the car for this race.
“I think the next race you’ll see us a lot closer to the top teams, and fighting with them. I’m looking forward to Spa already.”
