Team WRT planning two-car WEC effort in 2022

Team WRT boss Vincent Vosse has said that the plan for the Belgian squad is to double up on its car count in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2022.

The team made its prototype debut in 2021, part of which was a single-car effort in the LMP2 category in WEC.

The debut season for the team has been a successful one, taking multiple race wins including a class win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that was very nearly a one-two finish.

Looking ahead to next season, Vosse says that the plan is to further expand its efforts, but that the final decision remains yet to be made.

“We are trying to be the right partner for manufacturer in the future,” Vosse told MotorsportWeek.com. “For this, the next step will be to run two cars in WEC, which is the normal step.”

“If it’s going to happen or not, I have no clue. Everything can go wrong, something can go wrong. But it is my plan to run two cars in WEC next year.”

Team WRT has been linked to a possible role within the Audi LMDh programme, as the two parties have a long-standing relationship in GT3 and touring car racing.

Were the team to announce an expanded effort, it would join other major names that will either expand their efforts in 2022 or join the series with a new, multi-car effort.

United Autosports, champions in 2020, have already announced an expanded two-car effort after two years of running a single car. Additionally, American racing stalwarts Team Penske are believed to be preparing for a two-car LMP2 effort in order to prepare for its LMDh programme with Porsche.

AF Corse will also join the class in 2022 with a single car for Francois Perrodo, Nicklas Nielsen and Alessio Rovera, while the Prema-Iron Lynx partnership will also contest the LMP2 category with a yet-to-be-confirmed line-up.
