F2 and F3 place focus on Feature Races with new points system

A revamp of the points system in Formula 2 and Formula 3 will place more emphasis on their respective Feature Races from 2022.

Formula 2 and Formula 3 will revert to holding two races per weekend once more from 2022 after the experiment of having three races at each event in 2021 proved unpopular.

In a tweak to the old format, used through 2020, the Sprint Race for each category will be held on Saturday and the Feature Race on Sunday.

The points allocation for the Feature Race in each championship will once more mirror Formula 1’s system, with 25 for a win, down to one for 10th, with the grid order determined by the outcome of qualifying.

But in a deviation from the existing allocation there will be fewer points available elsewhere.

The fastest lap in each race will now only be worth one point, rather than two points, while from 2022 only two points – rather than four – will be awarded for pole position.

For Formula 2, the Sprint Race (the grid of which is determined by reversing the top 10 from qualifying) will award points to the top eight, distributed 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

For Formula 3, the Sprint Race (the grid of which is determined by reversing the top 12 from qualifying) will award points to the top 10, distributed 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Sprint Races previously allocated 15 points to the victor.

It means that there will be a maximum of 39 points on offer per race weekend, a reduction on the 48 that were available when the championships last ran a two-race format in 2020.
