Organisers of the new-for-2022 Miami Grand Prix have confirmed that the inaugural event will take place on May 6-8.
Miami will join Formula 1’s schedule next season after several years of discussions, with the area around the Hard Rock Stadium, in Miami Gardens, the location for the event.
Formula 1 is still in the process of finalising its 2022 schedule but on Thursday officials in Miami revealed the race, at the Miami International Autodrome, will be on May 8.
“There is no doubt in my mind that the Formula 1 community and the sport’s fanbase worldwide are going to be amazed by what they see next May,” said Miami Grand Prix CEO, Richard Cregan.
“The circuit construction is progressing in line with expectations, and now that we have our date confirmed with Formula 1, we can rapidly follow up with revealing more of the detail of the experience that will be enjoyed at the trackside which will make this a truly stand-out addition to the calendar.
“This location is already well known for creating unforgettable experiences for events like the Super Bowl and Miami Open. We look forward to embracing an entirely new global sporting occasion.”
Confirmation of Miami’s date means the event will not be paired with Formula 1’s usual spring visit to North America, in Canada, as initially anticipated.
It is understood that Canada will instead be paired as a back-to-back event with Azerbaijan, in mid-June, following on from Spain and Monaco, in late May.
The 2022 calendar, which will feature 23 events, is due to be presented at the next meeting of the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council in mid-October.
It is understood that Bahrain will open the new season in March, followed by Saudi Arabia, with returns to Australia and China provisionally planned for April – both events having been absent due to the pandemic.
The British Grand Prix is provisionally listed for July 3, moving in front of Austria and France in the schedule.
I’m so happy that this just another flat parking lot race track. The last thing f-1 needs elevations in their tracks;-)
