A technical issue with Alpine’s Formula 1 car at the latest 18-inch tyre test resulted in zero laps recorded in France on Thursday.
The test, which was the final run of a two-day evaluation at Magny-Cours, was scheduled to be the last test day of Pirelli’s 18-inch tyre programme in 2021.
18-inch tyres will be used full-time in F1 next year, and will be introduced alongside a number of other technical regulations, aimed at increasing competition at the front of the field and allowing for closer racing.
Daniil Kvyat, who holds the role of Alpine’s reserve driver this year, handled duties in the test car on Wednesday and was set to get back behind the wheel on Thursday.
Motorsport Week understands that Pirelli and the FIA are currently evaluating the situation, with the tyre supplier keen to gather the data it missed out on due to the issues.
The test was directed at Pirelli’s wet weather compounds, and was just the third examination of the intermediate and wet tyres this year.
