Formula 1 has announced the formation of a new award that will recognise the driver who makes the most overtakes throughout the course of a season.
Called the Crypto.com Overtake Award, all driver overtakes will be tallied from the season-opening race in Bahrain to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is scheduled to host the final round of the campaign.
Currently, Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel leads the field in the most overtakes completed so far in 2021.
F1 will introduce new broadcast graphics in each race which will signal overtaking possibilities and potential moves, while also keeping fans up to date on who is in the running for the award.
Ben Pincus, Director of Commercial Partnerships at Formula 1, said: “We’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Crypto.com as we introduce the Overtake Award which will integrate the brand into Formula 1 throughout the season, in addition to the title partnership of the F1 Sprint Events.
“The Crypto.com Overtake Award gives us the chance to celebrate drivers’ instincts to make bold and strategic moves which reflects the qualities needed when dealing in cryptocurrency.”
F1’s season resumes this weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix, bringing an end to the summer break and commencing the second half of the campaign.
Not an intergral part of racing as a target, just a statistic to be recorded.
However, yet another graphic to add to the unexplained boxes obscuring the already poor on track view.
