AJ Foyt will return to the IndyCar paddock this weekend, after missing the previous five races recovering from heat stroke.
The 86-year-old overheated earlier in the summer while working at one of his properties, and heeded the advice of his doctors to stay home to recover.
With this being Foyt’s second instance of heat stroke, the first occurring over 40 years ago, he agreed that it was best to not expose himself to the elements during the hottest part of IndyCar’s summer schedule.
The four-time Indy 500 champion was last at the track for the 105th running of the great race in late May, where he was witness to Helio Castroneves tying his own record by leading the field across the yard of bricks for a fourth time.
During the races that Foyt missed, his team continued to struggle to get good results amongst a deep field of talent.
In the most recent race in Nashville, Dalton Kellett suffered an electronics issue on the opening lap and Sebastien Bourdais was hit by Marcus Ericsson just a few laps later. The result was both drivers finishing outside the top 20 for the first time this year.
The two-car team will look to bounce back with their team’s namesake back in paddock for this weekend’s Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix at the 2.44-mile Indianapolis road course.
