Lewis Hamilton beat Max Verstappen to the fastest time during final practice in Hungary by less than a tenth of a second.

Hamilton, chasing a record-breaking ninth victory at the Hungaroring, clocked a time of 1:16.826s, in conditions that were slightly cooler than Friday’s heat-soaked session.

Hamilton’s time left him just 0.088s faster than Verstappen at the conclusion of the one-hour session.

Valtteri Bottas, who fronted Friday’s running, remained in the mix, two-tenths behind team-mate Hamilton.

Ferrari show pace, Perez still struggling

Ferrari languished outside of the top 10 on Friday but firmly vaulted back into contention on Saturday, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc fourth and fifth respectively.

Lando Norris was sixth for McLaren while Daniel Ricciardo showed more promise by classifying in eighth spot.

Sergio Perez’s lack of one-lap performance, relative to the front-runners, continued in the final practice session.

Perez finished down in seventh spot, a full second behind team-mate Verstappen, leaving him with a sizeable chunk of time to find prior to qualifying.

Giovinazzi has two near-misses

Antonio Giovinazzi has lacked pace through the weekend so far and had a couple of near-misses during the closing stages of the session.

Alfa Romeo released him from his garage into the path of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and brushed the rear of the AMR21, fortunately avoiding sizeable contact.

Then a few minutes later on track he was dawdling at the penultimate corner, forcing AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly to take evasive action as he tried to complete a hot lap.

Both of those incidents will be investigated by the stewards.

Schumacher in Q1 race after crash

Mick Schumacher dealt his qualifying chances a substantial blow after he crashed out heavily through the right-hander at Turn 11.

The impact caused a sizeable amount of damage to the left-hand-side of Schumacher’s VF-21 with just a couple of hours to go until the start of Q1.

Schumacher was uninjured in the accident that brought out the red flags.

Schumacher previously missed qualifying in Monaco after a hefty off in the final practice session.
