Alfa Romeo in no rush to settle 2022 F1 line-up

Alfa Romeo says it is “far too early” to determine its line-up for the 2022 Formula 1 season.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Alfa Romeo’s name will remain in Formula 1 for the next few years after renewing its partnership with Sauber Motorsport.

Alfa Romeo became title partner for Sauber in 2018 prior to taking on naming rights a year later.

It has fielded Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi since 2019.

Neither Raikkonen nor Giovinazzi is contracted beyond the end of the campaign and no decision is likely to be taken in the interim period.

“It’s far too early,” explained Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur, who has committed his future to the Hinwil-based outfit.

“I had the same question last week and it has absolutely nothing to do with Alfa Romeo, the driver choice is the responsibility of the team [Sauber].

“We have to take time to discuss and think about this, but we are not in a rush.

“I want to see what happens in F1 and in the junior series also, and I will take the decision on the second part of the season – not before.”

Alfa Romeo also has Robert Kubica on its books as reserve driver and Ferrari junior Callum Ilott as back-up reserve.

Both Kubica and Ilott have taken part in FP1 sessions this season.

Sauber-backed youngster Theo Pourchaire, 17, has already emerged as a race winner in Formula 2 this year.
