An extension hospital that was opened at the location of Formula 1’s Mexico City Grand Prix will be wound down over the coming weeks.
A facility of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) was set up in the pits and paddock complex at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in May 2020 due to the pandemic.
At its peak the facility featured 340 beds and had 1,300 medical workers.
Due to a reconversion of hospital units elsewhere in Mexico City the extension hospital will cease to function on July 15.
In a statement released by Mexican GP organisers they thanked “the dedication and commitment of the doctors, nurses, social workers, orderlies, administrators and the rest of the IMSS staff, who joined in a coordinated effort to respond to the challenge presented by the pandemic.”
Formula 1 returned to a reconfigured Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in 2015, following a 23-year absence, though did not compete at the venue in 2020 due to the pandemic.
This year’s Mexico City Grand Prix is currently scheduled to take place on October 31, as the middle segment of a triple header than includes the United States and Sao Paulo events.
