Red Bull Junior driver Juri Vips stormed to a convincing maiden FIA Formula 2 victory in the second Sprint Race of the weekend at the Baku City Circuit.
The Estonian passed early leader David Beckmann and was never headed thereafter as he collected his first win on the occasion of Formula 2’s 100th race since its relaunch in 2017.
Vips’ win also made him the seventh different victor from the opening eight races in 2021.
Jehan Daruvala took third place, while Bent Viscaal was fourth, having started from reverse grid pole, with Sprint Race 1 winner Robert Shwartzman in fifth.
Dan Ticktum and Liam Lawson were sixth and seventh, while Oscar Piastri was eighth and collected the bonus points for the fastest lap.
Ticktum’s result was particuarly eye-catching in the wake of being spun on the opening lap when Guanyu Zhou suffered a stuck throttle into Turn 1.
The problem forced championship leader Zhou into retirement but he still retains a healthy advantage at the top of the standings.
Sunday’s Feature Race is scheduled for 12:45 local time.
