Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier has succumbed to the injuries he sustained in a crash during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was caught up in an incident involving several bikes between Turns 9 and 10 in the closing stages of the session at Mugello.

Dupasquier was knocked unconscious as a result and was treated at the scene of the accident by medics for around half an hour.

He was then airlifted to the Careggi hospital in nearby Florence in a very serious but stable condition.

On Sunday MotoGP organisers announced that the Prustel GP rider succumbed to his injuries.

Prustel withdrew second rider Ryusei Yamanaka from the Moto3 contest before the news of Dupasquier’s passing broke, with mentor Thomas Luthi also electing to miss the following Moto2 race.

Dupasquier was in his second full Moto3 season and sat 10th in the riders’ standings heading to the Mugello round, having scored a best ever result of seventh in the Spanish GP at Jerez just a few weeks ago.

Dupasquier is the first rider to lose his life during a grand prix weekend since Luis Salom’s fatal accident in Moto2 at the 2016 Catalan round.

MotorsportWeek.com extends its deepest condolences to the friends and family of Dupasquier.
