Former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock has praised McLaren’s Lando Norris and labelled him the “man of the midfield”.
The young British racer has yet to finish outside of the top five, having taken fourth in Bahrain, a podium in Imola and fifth in Portugal, to place him third in the Drivers’ Championship, behind only Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
“For me, Lando Norris is clearly the man of the midfield,” Glock told Sky Deutschland, when asked about the 21-year-old. “He is delivering extremely well at the moment, driving good races and showing strong overtaking manoeuvres.
Norris has more than double the points of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, which Glock believes presents the Australian with a “mammoth task”. But the German driver, who raced for Jordan, Toyota, Virgin and Marussia, is certain Ricciardo will get up to speed quickly with his new team and turn that deficit around.
“He [Norris] makes few mistakes, maximises the package that he has available to him and is currently putting a mammoth task in front of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.
“[But] we have already seen this when he was at Renault – he had his little problems there at the beginning, but got on top of them very well over time.
“That’s why McLaren will have to wait and see how this internal team duel develops.
“In general, McLaren is currently very, very strong and I’m extremely happy for Andreas Seidl, who is doing a really great job in getting McLaren back on track as the third force.”
Like Norris, McLaren also sits third in the championship standings, 11 points ahead of Ferrari and 30 behind Red Bull.
