Renowned German outfit Walkenhorst Motorsport will enter the DTM for the first time in its history, entering the BMW M6 GT3.

The team has been racing in GT3 competition since 2013 and has since won the Spa 24 Hours, as well as race victories in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie (NLS).

It embarked on one of the most successful years in its history in 2020, topping the GT3 standings in the NLS and taking two victories and the driver’s title in the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

“We are delighted to announce our involvement in the DTM. As a team, we have worked very hard to turn the DTM project into reality,” team manager Niclas Königbauer says. “

“After our international achievements in the past years, graduating into the high-class DTM is a logical step to expand our involvement in GT3 racing.

“It is our aim to compete at the highest level in motorsport, so as a result, it was clear to us that the DTM is the place to be.”

The team established itself in the DTM paddock during the 2020 season, when it competed in the GT4-based DTM Trophy support series.

“During the races in the junior category, we got to know and appreciate the DTM platform and have established many contacts. That was highly valuable to us,” Königbauer says.

“Currently, we are planning a double programme and are working on repeating our commitment in the DTM Trophy as now, optimum synergies have been created for teams on the DTM platform.”

While the team states it intends to enter the M6 GT3, it is not yet clear how many cars the team intends to enter, nor has the team specified who it will select as drivers for its first season in the revamped series.

“The BMW M6 GT3 is a highly matured race car with which we have had a lot of experience and many achievements over the years. We are convinced that we can be successful with the M6 against the strong opposition in the DTM as well,” Königbauer concludes.
