Daniel Ricciardo believes he must be a more aggressive driver if he is to produce positive results for Toro Rosso, to ensure he impresses enough to keep his seat.
The Australian was confirmed at the Italian outfit earlier this month alongside rookie Jean-Eric Vergne.
Speaking about his race starts, the 22-year-old admitted he had previously opted for a more cautious line into the first turn when he drove for HRT in 2011, but that would need to change in 2012 if he is to score points consistently.
“I think my actual starts are okay, the initial reaction off the line is fine,” he told the Australian Associated Press. “But a few times this year I got a good start and jumped the car [ahead] off the line but maybe didn’t go hard enough into the first corner or went for the safer inside line.
“I probably need a little bit more aggression which I guess will come with experience at this level.”
Ricciardo also believes he can learn from his teammates driving style, despite Vergne having never competed in an F1 race.
“He’s got potential and he’s quick. We drive quite similar but he has probably got what I don’t have in the aggressive side.
“So maybe I can learn from him, at least in the junior categories that’s been his style.”
