Mick Schumacher has chosen 47 as the race number that he will carry throughout his Formula 1 career.
Haas confirmed on Wednesday that Formula 2 championship leader Schumacher will step up to the team next season on a multi-year deal.
Formula 1 introduced a system in 2014 that enabled drivers to select a number between 2 and 99 to carry throughout their careers in the championship.
Schumacher has used assigned numbers during previous test outings with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo in 2019 but sported 47 during a recent private run at Ferrari’s Fiorano facility.
“Primarily it’s because 4 and 7 are two numbers I really like,” said Schumacher.
“I won the F3 championship with [4] and 7 is a number very close to me as well. As both of them were taken I think 47 was the best choice.
“And at the end, which let’s say underlined it, was the fact if you calculated all the birthdays of our family together it would equal 47, so it’s a pretty nice feature to it and I think just underlined we should choose that number.”
Schumacher’s 2021 Haas team-mate Nikita Mazepin has chosen 9, though admitted he preferred 99, which is unavailable due to Antonio Giovinazzi’s presence on the grid.
Meanwhile Haas stand-in Pietro Fittipaldi will run with 51 this weekend in Bahrain while Williams reserve driver Jack Aitken is set to use 89 for his debut.
