Magnussen eyes IndyCar, but accepts 2021 seat unlikely

Kevin Magnussen has conceded that a 2021 seat in IndyCar is unlikely for him, despite his interest in competing in the category.

Magnussen will leave the Haas Formula 1 team at the end of 2020 and is yet to announce his plans for next season, but previously labelled IndyCar as a potential destination for his future.

However, due to many outfits having already secured their line-ups for next year, Magnussen doesn’t see himself striking a deal despite having discussions with several teams.

“I’ve been speaking with teams and seeing what is possible,” Magnussen said.

“We’re a little bit late in the year, so a lot of teams have already got drivers for the future, I don’t think it looks likely for next year for sure.

Magnussen added that the “spectacular” oval circuits that feature on IndyCar’s schedule hold appeal.

“IndyCar is something very high on my list and I’ve always been a fan,” he said.

“I’d love to try it, it’s a challenge that I’d really get really excited about, a lot of new things.

“I’ve always found oval tracks to be something that I think is spectacular, very different to what I’ve ever done in my career, we don’t really do ovals in Europe.

“The road courses out there are fantastic as well, really old school, and the thing about the cars being very similar is also a very good thing.

“That means you can make a bigger difference as a driver, my dad has been racing in America for about 20 years and I’ve spent a lot of time there, I really like being in America, I think that would suit me pretty well.”

Magnussen has scored just a single F1 Championship point in 2020, which came at the third round of the season in Hungary.
