Green: Racing Point must eliminate distractions to finish third
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Racing Point must have a run of weekends free from distractions if it hopes to finish the season third in the Constructors’ Championship, according to its technical director Andy Green.

The Silverstone-based squad currently sits third in the standings, but faces stiff competition from McLaren and Renault, who both linger just a handful of points behind.

Racing Point has endured a drama-filled campaign, including a lengthy dispute over the legality of its brake ducts, which led to a 15-point deduction, and unwell drivers unable to race.

Green believes that Racing Point has endured just a single “normal” weekend so far in 2020, which was at the season-opening race in Austria.

Speaking at the Nurburgring, Green said the team needs to “stop getting a lot of bad luck, to start with” in order to finish third.

He continued: “We just don’t seem to be getting the run of the green at the moment.

“I want just a normal race weekend, and we haven’t had a normal race weekend probably since race one this season.

“Something happens every weekend, and all we need between now and the end of the season is just to have normal race weekends, where we can just race the car, set it up normally, just have a normal weekend without any major distractions.

“That will give us our best possible opportunity. We’ve had one of those so far this year, so that’s going to make the difference for us.

“If we have that, then I think we really can challenge for third. We really can.

“It’s going to be a real battle. There’s three teams there, we’re just swapping places all the time. It’s going to be good fun to the end of the season.”
