Rene Rast has taken pole position for the Saturday DTM race at Zolder, snatching pole away from BMW’s Timo Glock.
Glock surprisingly jumped to the top of the timing sheets in the second half of the session with a time of 01:29:333 and looked set for pole until he was challenged by Rast.
Rast’s first attempt at beating Glock was thwarted when he was blocked on his flying lap by Sheldon van der Linde, but was able to complete another lap and surpass his compatriot by setting a 01:28:87. His time was then briefly under investigation for track limits, but was not penalized
Glock remained on the front row with second place ahead of Robin Frijns and Marco Wittmann, with Mike Rockenfeller rounding out the top five.
Van der Linde ended up setting the sixth fastest time ahead of championship leader Nico Müller, who qualified a disappointing seventh after an off-track moment earlier in the session.
The Swiss driver a mistake moments after posting a fast lap, was caught out by the damp track and slid off into the gravel at turn 1. He was later able to improve to a time of 01:30:039, but was seven-tenths removed from pole position.
Harrison Newey took eighth ahead of Lucas Auer, with the top ten completed by Loic Duval.
Philipp Eng, a race winner in Zolder in 2019, qualified eleventh ahead of Ferdinand Habsburg, Jamie Green and Jonathan Aberdein. The grid was completed by Robert Kubica and Fabio Scherer.
