Sergio Perez has conceded that his departure from Racing Point “hurts a bit more” knowing that the team will have a competitive Formula 1 package in the 2021 season.
Last week Perez confirmed his departure from the Silverstone-based squad, which will be rebranded to Aston Martin next year, and will be replaced by four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
Racing Point has enjoyed a strong opening half to the 2020 campaign, sitting fourth in the Constructors’ Championship with one podium result to its name.
Perez had signed a three-year deal in 2019 but will not continue with the team into 2021.
“I know I’m leaving a great car that is looking great for next year,” Perez said. “Definitely the team will be stronger next year than this year.
“In that regard it hurts a bit more that you know you’re leaving a good car. But you never know in the future, things in Formula 1 change so quickly.
“Let’s see what the future holds for the world, for both of us.”
Perez’s hopes of remaining in F1 next year appear to rest on potential deals at Alfa Romeo and Haas, with both teams yet to announce their line-ups for 2021.
Ross Brawn, F1’s Managing Director, has backed Perez to find a seat, insisting the 30-year-old is currently driving at the peak of his career.
“Sergio now finds himself on the move after a very long period with this team,” Brawn wrote in his Tuscan GP post-race column.
“He must have very mixed emotions. However, he’s a very fast racer who is driving at his peak right now and deserves a place on next year’s grid.
“Hopefully he can find the right opportunity and start a new adventure.”
