Racing Point boss Otmar Szafnauer says he “can’t think of a better driver” than Sebastian Vettel to front its Aston Martin project from the 2021 season.
Racing Point confirmed on Thursday that Vettel will join the team on a multi-year deal from 2021, ending months of speculation over its driver line-up.
The squad, which has been through various guises, currently operates under the Racing Point name, following its acquisition in mid-2018 by businessman Lawrence Stroll.
It will enter 2021 under the Aston Martin name following Stroll’s purchase of the famous car company earlier this year.
“Everybody at Silverstone is hugely excited by this news,” said Szafnauer.
“Sebastian is a proven champion and brings a winning mentality that matches our own ambitions for the future as Aston Martin F1 Team.
“On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Sebastian is one of the best in the world, and I can’t think of a better driver to help take us into this new era.
“He will play a significant role in taking this team to the next level.”
Vettel has competed for BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, Red Bull and Ferrari during a career that has spanned 248 grands prix.
He won the 2010-13 titles with Red Bull and has taken 53 victories, mostly recently at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix, which marked his sole 2019 win.
