Toyota Gazoo Racing WEC star Jose Maria Lopez will be racing a Toyota Supra GT4 in this weekend’s DTM Trophy round at the Lausitzring.

Lopez, who currently leads the points standings alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway in the FIA World Endurance Championship, will make his GT4 debut racing the #90 GT4 Supra entered by German outfit Ring Racing, while the #91 will be driven by Heiko Hammel.

The GT4-spec Supra will be making its debut in the DTM support series. Lopez was involved in the car’s development and completed tests at Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring.

While the Argentinian has no previous experience in GT4 racing, he has previously raced a GT1 Aston Martin and has experience in tin-top racing with three straight WTCC titles with Citroën between 2014 and 2016.

“I am very excited to take part in the DTM Trophy at the Lausitzring and race the GR Supra,” said Lopez. “It is a new track and a new discipline for me but I will try to be quick and hope that my background in driving touring cars and GTs helps. When the opportunity came up, I immediately said yes.

I have been involved in the development of the GR Supra and tested it at Spa-Francorchamps and the Nordschleife, so I know it is a very nice and stable car which had a good speed from the beginning. So we hope for a good result.”
