A typically succinct Kimi Raikkonen labelled qualifying “a disaster” for Alfa Romeo but feels the team is not extracting the maximum from its C39.
Alfa Romeo was slowest in qualifying for the third successive event and endured a double Q1 knockout once more.
Kimi Raikkonen qualified slowest of the 20 drivers at the Hungaroring while team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi was only 19th.
“It was obviously a disaster but there’s a lot of things we can do better and then, of course, we also have to find a lot more speed in the car,” he said.
“Today was a disaster, but we’re certainly not getting the most out of what we have too.
“For sure we are not where we want to be, but I also don’t think we’re doing any favors to ourselves in certain things. Obviously, we have to do things better and improve.”
Alfa Romeo displayed stronger race pace compared to one-lap speed in Austria and Giovinazzi expressed hope that the situation can be replicated in Hungary.
“It’s been a very difficult day with a disappointing result,” said Giovinazzi. “We have a lot of work to do to salvage something from this weekend, but we will need to see how the race goes tomorrow.
“The conditions are still uncertain, but in any case we need to understand what happened today.
“Starting from the back is not ideal, especially on a track where overtaking is not easy, but we can hope to have better pace in the race, as we did in Austria.”
