Alex Zanardi remains in a serious condition in Siena hospital after undergoing a third surgery since he was involved in a serious road accident.
Zanardi collided with a truck while handcycling in his native Italy and underwent neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery, before being placed in an induced coma, on Friday 19 June.
Zanardi had a second surgery seven days ago and on Monday doctors treating him issued a bulletin detailing that they have carried out another “complex” procedure.
“The patient has undergone a new surgery, performed by the professionals of the maxillofacial and neurosurgery, aimed at craniofacial reconstruction and stabilisation of the areas affected by the trauma reported following the accident of 19 June,” read a statement.
“The operation carried out is part of the interventions planned by the multidisciplinary team that takes care of Zanardi to allow any continuation of the therapeutic path.”
“The fractures were complex,” explained Professor Paolo Gennaro, director of the maxillofacial surgery department of the facility.
“This required careful programming that made use of computerised, digital and three-dimensional technologies, made to measure of the patient.
“The complexity of the case was rather singular, even if it is a type of fracture that we routinely face in our center.”
Zanardi’s condition remains otherwise unchanged, as he remains in a coma in the intensive care unit, where his neurological condition is severe.
