Arrow McLaren SP has revealed the livery that will adorn Fernando Alonso’s car at this year’s running of the Indianapolis 500.
Alonso, 37, will drive the No. 66 Ruoff Mortgage Arrow McLaren SP machine for his third crack at the event, which has been rescheduled from May to August 23 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Alonso first attempted the event while racing for McLaren in Formula 1 in 2017, missing the Monaco Grand Prix, and ran competitively throughout the month of May.
Alonso, whose entry was run in collaboration with Andretti and Honda, qualified fifth and led 27 laps before retiring due to an engine failure.
Having been absent in 2018 he and McLaren returned in 2019 but the effort went through a series of setbacks, leading to a failure to qualify for the race.
McLaren now has a fully-fledged team in IndyCar after collaborating with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and will field Pato O’Ward and Oliver Askew at each race this year.
Alonso has yet to define his future racing plans after stepping back from the World Endurance Championship at the conclusion of the 2018/19 season.
Alonso co-piloted Toyota’s TS050 HYBRID to back-to-back Le Mans 24 Hours in 2018/19 to leave him needing an Indianapolis 500 victory to complete motorsport’s Triple Crown.
The Spaniard tasted success at the Monaco Grand Prix back in 2006 and 2007.
He competed in the Dakar Rally, in Saudi Arabia, earlier this year.
