The opening of the 2020 DTM season has been delayed further following the decision by Nüremberg to deny permission for the planned season opener to be held at the Norisring. As a result, the season will now kick off at Spa-Francorchamps on August 1-2.
The Nüremberg City Council announced on Thursday that it had decided to uphold its suspension on major gatherings until the end of August, meaning the race at the street circuit would not be able to take place.
“The decision not to grant governmental permission for the DTM races at the Norisring came as a surprise to us,” commented Marcel Mohaupt, ITR managing director.
“However, we respect the decision by the City of Nuremberg. For the DTM, too, safety of everyone involved has the highest priority. Now, we are looking forward to the new season opener at Spa-Francorchamps”
DTM has said in a statement that the series has been granted the necessary permissions to hold the Spa opener by Belgian authorities and went on to say that ‘a detailed and precise infection prevention plan is in place, developed with renowned experts and permanently adapted to the dynamic situation involving the Covid-19 pandemic.’
The rest of the updated 2020 calendar has remained unchanged from the version announced on Wednesday.
