The planned opening round of the 2020 DTM season is set to be called off after Nuremberg denied permission for the series’ Norisring event.
DTM unveiled a revised calendar this week in which it revealed its intention to begin its delayed 2020 campaign at the street venue, located in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg, on July 10-12.
But on Thursday Nuremberg City Council notified that it has upheld its suspension on gatherings until the end of August, meaning DTM’s event will not be able to take place.
“The Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care issued the 5th Bavarian Infection Protection Ordinance with effect from May 30, 2020,” confirmed the council.
“This still contains a basic ban on events. The stipulation that major events are prohibited until August 31, 2020 also remains unchanged.
“In view of the ongoing pandemic situation, it can be assumed that the corresponding bans will also apply to the planned race date.
“After examination, the city of Nuremberg, as the responsible district administrative authority, comes to the conclusion that this event cannot be approved as a “ghost race” for reasons of infection protection law and that an exemption approval cannot be granted as it stands today.”
Nuremberg Mayor Marcus König commented: “We regret this situation and look forward to a new edition of the traditional Norisring race next year.”
