Organisers of the Silverstone Classic have confirmed the event’s cancellation for 2020, freeing up the date for a potential double-header British Grand Prix.
Formula 1 is in discussions with the UK government over receiving an exemption from the 14-day quarantine period that is set to be introduced for international arrivals.
It is understood that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has intervened in order to facilitate Formula 1’s efforts, having been keen to welcome back sporting events as part of a post-coronavirus landscape.
Provisional dates of July 26 and August 2 for two races at Silverstone have been pencilled in to a schedule, following on from July 5 and 12 events at Spielberg, which remain subject to Austrian government approval.
The Silverstone Classic, which attracts classic car owners and thousands of enthusiasts, was scheduled for July 31 to August 2, but on Tuesday event organisers announced its cancellation.
The event was due to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year.
Organisers held out hopes of being able to run the event, or postpone, but deemed that such an attempt was no longer feasible.
