Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that Formula One could return to Austria in the near future, given they now have a facility which is able to host Formula One again.
That’s thanks to Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz. The billionaire bought the old A1 Ring – which last hosted an F1 race in 2003 – and renovated the facility, now known as the Red Bull Ring.
When questioned, Ecclestone told APA that “everything is possible” for a return to the Zeltweg track.
“It is good that the circuit is ready to go again,” he said. “We’re always happy to go down there. We have always loved going to Austria.”
It is thought FOTA want a return to some European tracks, rather than the continued expansion into Asia, to be written into the new Concorde Agreement – could the return of an Austrian GP be a result of such an agreement?
Michael Schumacher says he is also keen for the race to make a return on the calendar.
“I see no reason why Formula One shouldn’t go back to Austria.
“I’ve been always happy to race in Zeltweg, from the early days in Formula Ford and F3 all the way to F1,” he added. “I like the track a lot and it’s a good thing the same layout has been kept.”
The circuit will open for business this weekend with both Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso in attendance to perform as part of the launch party, which will also involve a classic grand prix.
