Organisers of the MotoGP World Championship have confirmed that the Spanish Grand Prix has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MotoGP had issued a revised calendar in the wake of initial disruption caused by the virus, with only Moto2 and Moto3 taking part in the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix.

Further events were postponed and the Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for 1-3 May at Jerez, was due to start the premier class campaign.

But in a statement issued on Thursday it was announced that involved parties have agreed to delay the event.

“As the situation remains in a state of constant evolution, a new date for the Spanish GP cannot be confirmed until it becomes clearer when exactly it will be possible to hold the event,” read a statement.

“A revised calendar will be published as soon as available.”

The next scheduled event is for France’s Le Mans Circuit on 15-17 May though it is deemed unlikely that this grand prix will take place as planned.

Other major sporting events in France, including the Le Mans 24 Hours and Roland Garros, have been postponed until September.

Formula 1 has already postponed or cancelled all of its events up to June’s Canadian Grand Prix.
