MP Motorsport has announced that 17-year-old Lukas Dunner will join the team for the 2020 FIA Formula 3 championship.
Dunner will re-join the team he raced with at the prestigous 2019 Macau Grand Prix.
The Austrian had qualified 24th, but climbed 12 places during the qualification race to finish 12th and eventually finished the Grand Prix in 14th, behind now Formula 2 and Williams Development driver Dan Ticktum.
Dunner has previous experience with MP Motorsport after running in the Spanish and SMP Formula 4 championships for the Dutch outfit.
He will make his F3 debut on the back of finishing third in the EuroFormula Open Championship in 2019.
Currently, Dunner will line-up alongside Bent Viscaal, with a third driver for the team yet to be announced.
“It feels good to be back home”, said Dunner on rejoining the team with which he raced in Formula 4 in 2017.
“I couldn’t think of a
better environment for my promotion to FIA F3 level, as I have fond memories of
my F4 season with MP three years ago. Together with Bent, I’m sure we will make
an impact on the series, and in my debut season I hope to learn from his
experience in FIA F3.”
“It’s a joy to welcome Luki back into the team”, added MP’s
team manager Sander Dorsman, “He has developed well in the two seasons since,
and I’m positive that he will be an asset to our FIA F3 team.
“With Bent and Lukas, our line-up for 2020 is shaping up really well, and I can’t wait to go racing with these guys.”
