Newman in serious condition, injuries ‘not life-threatening’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman is in a serious condition in hospital following a nasty accident at the finish of the Daytona 500 on Monday.

Rain delayed the race from Sunday until Monday and Roush Fenway Racing driver Newman was involved in a collision as the event reached its final stages.

Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney made contact, with Blaney going low, before he clipped the rear of leader Newman’s car, sending him heavily into the outside wall.

Newman’s car flipped and as the vehicle landed upside down it was struck by an unsighted Corey LaJoie.

Newman’s car then continued along the track before it came to a halt upside down, and on fire, with medical crews rapidly on the scene to tend to the driver.

NASCAR released a statement confirming that “Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center. He is in serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening.

“We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you respect the privacy of Ryan and his family during this time.

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation and we will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Hamlin went on to narrowly edge Blaney to win the race for the second straight year.
