Racing Point should aim for podiums and fourth position in the Constructors’ Championship in 2020, according to Sergio Perez.
Racing Point, under its Force India guise, reached a high of fourth across 2016 and 2017, with Perez taking a handful of podiums.
The squad last claimed a top three finish in Azerbaijan in 2018, courtesy of Perez, a few months before its eventual takeover by Lawrence Stroll.
Racing Point finished seventh in the 2019 Constructors’ Championship but made progress after a slow start, with Perez scoring points at each of the last six grands prix.
“I cannot wait already for 2020, I think it’s a big year ahead for us,” said Perez.
“I think [so far] we managed to improve step-by-step but obviously not enough. I don’t think we got close enough to McLaren, they were strong this year.
“Renault were a step ahead but it’s been very close to Toro Rosso I think. They obviously did a better job than us and scored plenty of points when the opportunities were there, so that made a huge difference in the midfield when you are able to score big points.
“[But in 2020] we can improve a lot. There are great teams out there and everyone is going to improve, so for us to catch up and improve it will be difficult.
“I think podiums and P4 in the championship should be the target for us next year.”
Perez also believes that stable year-on-year regulations should assist Racing Point’s cause.
“In a way it brings the whole field closer when there is stability in the rules,” said the Mexican, who extended his contract with Racing Point through 2022.
“Generally, over the years we’ve seen that when there is little changing the field tends to be closer together. So I expect the grid to come together a bit more next year.”
