Pierre Gasly says he has been able to drive in a “more natural” style in recent events, in the wake of his return to Toro Rosso.
Gasly was promoted to Red Bull for 2019 in place of Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo but struggled for pace and consistency, particularly in comparison to team-mate Max Verstappen.
During the summer break Red Bull opted to swap Gasly and Alexander Albon’s duties for the remainder of 2019, with Gasly returning to Toro Rosso.
Gasly raced to eighth place in Singapore, his best result since re-joining Red Bull’s junior team, and reckons there is still more to come from his side of the garage.
“With the work we’re doing with the engineers and the whole team, for sure there are things to improve,” he said.
“But I feel like we are making a step every weekend, also myself in the car, get a better feeling, get the car more or less where I want during the weekend.
“Hopefully we can keep going in the next races.
“I think I didn’t really manage to drive the way I liked before, and now I just feel like more I can do which is something more natural for me which is good.”
It was confirmed during the weekend that only Albon and Gasly are under consideration for a 2020 Red Bull seat, with Daniil Kvyat to remain at Toro Rosso.
When asked whether more races such as Singapore will help his prospects of a return to the senior team, Gasly said: “We’ll see how it goes. At the moment, I’m just happy with the step, also I managed to get the car where I want it to be and every weekend we seem to make a step forward.
“I think we still need to work even harder because there’s even more to come and we’ll see the outcome at the end of the year.”
