Nico Hulkenberg has reacted to his impending Renault exit by stating that driver decisions are “not only about performance”, after losing his seat to Esteban Ocon.
Hulkenberg joined Renault on a three-year deal in 2017 and led the team’s charge, taking a best of seventh in last season’s standings, but has endured a less profitable 2019 campaign.
He has scored points in just four events amid Renault’s troubled year and holds only 14th in the standings.
It was announced on Thursday that Ocon will join Renault on a two-year deal from 2020 and link up with Daniel Ricciardo, leaving Hulkenberg without a seat.
Hulkenberg responded by taking to social media, commenting: “It's a pity that the journey with Renault will end after the season, especially as we haven't been able to reach our goals yet.
“We had hoped to take another step forward this season, but unfortunately we haven't managed that so far.
“It is well known that the choice of drivers is not only about performance, it is a whole bundle of factors. But that's the way it is. Surely we would all have liked to see it differently.
“But nevertheless, I'll keep my focus and try to reach the maximum success for our team in the remaining races!”
Haas boss Guenther Steiner confirmed earlier on Thursday that Hulkenberg was a prime candidate to join the team for 2020 if it opts not to retain Romain Grosjean.
Hulkenberg has started 168 grands prix since making his debut for Williams in 2010, and has also raced for Sauber and Force India.
He is scheduled to speak to the media later on Thursday.
