Pierre Gasly led a Red Bull 1-2 as teams split tyre strategies during the early dry running in second practice for Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Gasly used Soft tyres to clock a time of 1:17.854, leaving him 0.055s clear of Medium-shod team-mate Max Verstappen.

Mercedes finished third and fourth, with FP1 pacesetter Lewis Hamilton equipped with the Hard tyre en route to a time that was 0.141s down on Gasly’s best.

Valtteri Bottas was a further two-tenths of a second behind on the Medium compound tyre.

Those times came during the first 25 minutes of the 90-minute session, shortly before a band of showers swept through the Hungaroring, denying drivers further running on slick tyres.

Renault and Alfa Romeo headed the midfield group, with Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg fifth and eighth respectively, while Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi took sixth and ninth.

The arrival of the wet weather contributed to a low-key display by Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc seventh on Mediums and Sebastian Vettel 13th on Hards.

German Grand Prix podium finisher Daniil Kvyat capped the top 10 but it was a short and expensive session for Toro Rosso team-mate Alexander Albon.

In dry conditions Albon dipped a wheel on the grass as he entered the final corner and spun into the barriers, suffering a hefty side-on impact, on only his second lap in the session.

Haas duo Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen were 11th and 12th, with Carlos Sainz Jr. 14th, having switched earlier than planned to his race power unit after a suspected hydraulic leak with his FP1 unit.

Racing Point pair Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll were 15th and 16th respectively, while George Russell built on encouraging FP1 pace by placing 17th, a tenth behind Stroll.

Lando Norris and Robert Kubica were the final of the 19 drivers who set a time.

The majority of drivers did appear on track on Intermediate tyres, after a lengthy spell of inactivity, but no faster times were set due to the worsened conditions.

Saturday’s third practice session is scheduled for 12:00 local time
