Christian Horner says Austria kerbs caused £250,000 damage in FP1

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has called for changes to be made to the Austrian Grand Prix 'sausage' kerbs after they caused damage worth £250,000 during first practice.

Renault's Nico Hulkenberg was the biggest victim of the high kerbs as he lost half of his front-wing during the session and caused a red flag, but Horner revealed that the kerbs have also damaged three Red Bull wings, with reports that Mercedes and Racing Point also suffered damage.

"It’s been a bit of a challenge [today]. We’ve got through about three front wings so far," he told Sky Sports. "Probably about £250,000 worth of damage.

"We’re not alone in that. There is I’m sure going to be a debate about the angle of these yellow triangles and the way they are."

It's not the first time the kerbs have been an issue in Austria. In 2016 Daniil Kvyat suffered major suspension failure after running over one of the kerbs, and although changes have been made, Horner reckons they're too inviting for drivers.

"They know they’re there. It needs something either more substantial that is a real deterrent because the invitation is there for the drivers to try to use it."

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff also raised concerns following Friday's opening practice session.

"I think the most spectacular failure was the Renault," said Wolff. "The front wing is completely gone but we have broken two flaps, I believe Racing Point has broken a front wing, so we need to do something around the sausage kerbs."
