Ferrari have an ‘open invitation’ to join Formula E – Alejandro Agag

Formula E boss Alejandro Agag says there is an "open invitation" for Ferrari to join the series, should they wish to at any point in the future.

The all-electric single-seater series has grown rapidly since its first race in 2014 and has welcomed several major manufacturers including Renault, Nissan, Jaguar, Audi and BMW and will see Porsche and Mercedes join later this year.

Ferrari has so far resisted calls to join the series but has, under former chairman Sergio Marchionne, signalled an interest.

"We continue to look at it, and I think we have not given up on the idea of potentially one day entering," Marchionne said before he tragically passed away last year.

Agag says he would of course welcome the Italian manufacturer with open arms.

"I would love Ferrari to come, especially with Porsche and all the others here, it would be a great fight. You know let's see. It's an open invitation," he told CNBC.

"You will always have the niche of ultra-high powerful cars that will be able to run fast and I think Ferrari definitely is that. Ferrari would never limit the top speed of their cars, but they will have to adapt in the future to whatever the landscape is and of course I think the landscape is electric."

Agag also responded to comments from former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone who recently described Formula E as the best bet for the future of motorsport.

"Bernie obviously is a genius. He created Formula 1 as it is today and he has a great vision of the whole map of motor sport and for him to say something like that I think is a great testimony for Formula E.

"Obviously I would welcome Bernie as an investor anytime, but we're not there yet. I think in general there can be very rapid growth in front of Formula E, but also simply because we are a lot smaller. So we have a lot more room to grow, because Formula 1 is bigger."
